Project Introduction

Public transportation in Sri Lanka has been really inconvenient and inconsistent over the years, as they are not well maintained and organized by the relevant authorities. When it comes to buses, the same scenario can be applied to the remote areas as well. Most of the time people are suffered due to the inconvenience of the time schedule and having to wait for a long time without knowing about at what time the bus is going to arrive. Because of that, people are wasting much of their valuable time on the road waiting for Buses.

As the general public, many people have experienced the crisis of bus transportation in Sri Lanka. Regardless of the current transportation system, mainly the bus drivers and conductors are responsible for the trouble that the passengers are facing today.  They are trying to collect as many passengers as they can to fill up the bus. That will result in wasting so much time and leaving the passengers for an unsafe and uncomfortable ride. People will get exhausted most of the time even at the beginning of the journey. The main purpose of this project is to develop a real-time bus tracking system to enhance the current bus service system and to reduce the wasting time of passengers. In this project, the scope of the system would be Anuradhapura – Horowpathana bus route. It was required to limit the scope because it will be an experimental study at the beginning and there won’t be enough resources available to expand the area at the moment. Once the research has been successful, it is possible to expand the area of implementation and move forward to the commercial level. In this area, there are lots of people who are traveling daily, especially the university students, teachers, and employees are among those people who wish to track the time and the location of buses very much.

The proposed solution is going to create a system that will predict the time of the arrival of the bus at the bus stop. It will also calculate the speed of buses which can be very crucial in people’s safety.
